![]() I laughed when I saw him, Who comically stood With his bright eyes of coal And his gay mouth of wood. His nose was a carrot, So pointed and thin, And a deep dimple sat On the end of his chin. ![]() Flat on the top Of his round, snowy head, He wore a warm cap Of delectable red. He carried a broom That was battered and brown, And he gave a sly wink Like an oversize clown. ![]() He stood by the fence Where a thick cedar grew, The awesome attraction Of more than a few Of the snowbirds who perched On a sheltering limb And were quite evidently Bewildered by him. ![]() I cannot be certain But as I stood near, I thought I saw just A slight twitch of his ear. He seemed to be listening For something somewhere That, however I tried, I could never quite hear. ![]() And then from the valley I heard a glad shout As a bell clanged, announcing That school had let out. And from all directions The children appeared, Glad that the snowman Had not disappeared. ![]() They patted fresh snow On his arms and his cheeks, Straightened his cap And his broom amid squeaks Of childish enjoyment That touched even him, And his wood mouth turned upward From smiling at them. ![]() His coal eyes grew misty To watch how they pressed Their curly heads close To his big snowy chest. And was it the wind That I heard softly say, "OH, WHAT A JOY TO WATCH CHILDREN AT PLAY !"? ~ Grace E. Easley ~ ![]()
